CARLOS J. MICHELSEN TERRY ACADEMIC PREPARATION: Ph.D. in Economics, London School of Economics and Political Science, 1975. Elected to the degree of Doctor in Economics (Ph.D.) on August 27th 1975. Thesis was the first to use Multidimensional Scaling to map out the decision making power of Mexican executives and personnel: "A Theoretical and Empirical Study of Perceptions of Relative Power among the Staff of some Mexican Industrial Organizations". Advisor: Prof. Keith Thurley. Both the course of study and research was funded by a Ford Foundation grant to the Monterrey Institute of Technology, Monterrey, Mexico. Elected to the degree of Master of Arts on July 15th, 1967 in Coventry Cathedral as the second graduate of the University in the Department of Economics and Business Administration. ACADEMIC PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Director, M.B.A. Program, 1995-2000, Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, Lima Peru. Developed course structure and content, lectured and managed an academic organisation which, in five years, grew to 210 graduate students and 15 professors. The course structure was based on original research about the importance of several megatendencies and the traits recognised as important for success as managers by a sample of local CEO's. The research was compared with the United States and other Latin American countries in order to obtain a locally relevant course structure. In 1999 succeeded in awarding the leading scholar, Dr. Russell Ackoff, a Honoris Causa Doctorate for his contribution to management thought and for inspiring the structure of the MBA program. Lectured on Marketing Management and Advanced Marketing. Professor of Economics, 1994-1995 Department of Economics, Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, Lima, Peru. Lectured on the Economics of Latin America and Capital Budgeting. Supervised several undergraduate thesis. Founding Dean, 1978-1979 Graduate School of Business, Universidad del Pacífico, Lima, Peru. A group of former MBA graduate students led by Mr. Carlos Bentin, now CEO of Peru's largesty brewery, requested assistance in organising a new M.B.A. in Peru where there was only one full-time M.B.A., originally set up by Stanford University. Designed a new course structure based on original local research and had the program approved by the Government, recruiting staff and students. Lectured Marketing, International Marketing and Business Policy as a major until March 1992. Professor, Coordinator and Dean, Graduate School of Business, Monterrey Institute of Technology, Monterrey, México. 1968-1978. As a full time Professor, was in charge of coordinating the Organization area and later the Business Policy area, teaching Business Policy courses. As Dean, enrollment was expanded and teaching techniques diversified, including the instalation of several business games. One of them, The Management Game, was organised internationally for the first time ever, with four other Universities using telex facilities: University of Akron, University of Texas at San Antonio (Prof. Gary Raffaelle participated), Université Laval in Canada, and the London School of Business Studies. This activity required installing the same software in four different universities and exchanging weekly decision data by telex. Organised the first Interamerican graduate course of study, the Interamerican M.B.A. jointly with the University of Texas (San Antonio) during the term of Dean Hodo, with which there was an intense exchange of students and professors: Profs. Dale Truett and Gary Raffaelle from UTSA and Prof. Bill Hunt from UT Austin, visited and lectured in Monterrey. Visiting Professor, University of Texas at San Antonio, 1974. Lectured on Organizational Theory and Design to MBA students. Invited to San Antonio from Mexico a large group of Mexican MBA students to compete with UTSA students on the organization business game EXORG. Consulting engagements are serviced in all major Latin American countries. Chairman of the Board, Marketing Directo S.A. 1982-2000 . Applied marketing techniques and computer data base management techniques to create Peru's first direct marketing enterprise. Chairman, Advisory Committe of the Mayor of Lima. 1980-1983. Led and organised the staff activities required to support the management of a city of 5 million inhabitants. All committee members were former MBA graduate students from Monterrey Tech.. Chairman of the Board, Empresa Nacional de Transporte Urbano del Perú S.A. 1980-1982. The largest public transport enterprise of Peru with over 2 thousand buses. (Privatised in 1990). Board Member, Banco de Comercio, 1980-1985 one of Peru's commercial banks. Chaired both the Computing and Marketing Committees. Board Member, PescaPeru, 1980-1985, helped manage Peru's largest fishing and fishmeal organization. Peru is the largest producer of fish meal in the world. Senior Consultant and Manager, Peat, Marwick , Mitchell & Co (now KPMG). Philadelphia, Houston and Monterrey, México. 1968-1970 . Assigned to the Houston office, helped purchase the Accounting practice of Don Ramón Cardenas, the largest auditing and accounting practice in Monterrey, México. Became manager of the Consulting office in Monterrey and was in charge of coordinating consulting projects in the areas of Human Resources, Organization and Operations Research in Mexico and Central America. Hired from Brussels immediately after graduation, underwent a course as Consultant Trainee in Actuarial and Compensation issues. Participated in several international consulting engagements in Compensation and Benefit Planning, and conducted a Market Research Survey for Magic Chef, a major applicance manufacturer using the firm's recently acquired IBM mainframe computer. .EDITORIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Member, International Editorial Board, Thunderbird International Business Review since 1998.
